Moruya lights up for Christmas

Share

Southern Phone, Moruya Business Chamber, River of Art Inc (ROA) and Moruya Rotary Inc have collaborated to fund and present a light installation in Vulcan Street, bringing light and life to Moruya over three nights, the weekend prior to Christmas 2020.

LUMINOUS is about bringing positive energy into the lives of our community and business district. It is about celebrating the beginning of well-earned school holidays, the coming of Christmas and summer, and about reclaiming our Christmas/New Year period lost in 2019/2020 to devastating bush fires. It is open to all members and businesses of the Moruya community, and it is planned with coherence to COVID restrictions.

Over the three nights of LUMINOUS the facades of selected shop fronts and heritage buildings along Vulcan Street will be wrapped in colour, with Moruya Courthouse and its tall pine trees being a focus point on Thursday and Friday nights. The lighting will include multi-colour static lighting and textured lighting programmed on a changing loop. Textured lighting is marked by a repeating pattern created by components within the light, and examples include water waves or concentric circles moving in a cycle.

‘After such a challenging year, Luminous is a great initiative to highlight our town and celebrate the festive season,” said Southern Phone CEO David Joss.

“Southern Phone has been part of the Moruya community since 2002, and we are very pleased to be able to support such a unique community celebration,” he said.

With the last 12 months being a blur of mostly grey due to bushfires and smoke, lost revenue due to COVID lockdowns, the event is a gift to the Moruya community and surrounding region, developed to support all local businesses and increase consumer traffic in the region.

Date: 5pm to 11pm daily for three evenings: Thursday 17th, Friday 18th and Saturday 19th December 2020.

Location: Vulcan Street precinct, with businesses along the Princes Hwy route and Moruya CBD area also invited to participate.

Activities: 5pm – 8pm live mini-mural painting by local visual artists (on temporary walls)

Activities: 7:30pm – 9pm live music performances by local musicians

Activities: 5pm – 9pm late night shopping, restaurants & take away food

Activities: 8pm – 11pm (overnight if possible) light up of shopfronts and building facades to create a colourful wonderland.
