- Reverse Charge Call - What is it?
A reverse charge call is an operator assisted service. A person calls a designated number and asks us to connect them to a particular phone number and charge the customer of that number for the call. If the request is accepted and the call connected the person answering the call is asked whether they wish to accept the call.
If the customer of the service requested by the caller accepts the call, we charge them the following charge in addition to the call charges for operator assisted calls:

For clarity, when you make an operator assisted call which is also either a reverse charge, third party charge or particular person call or any combinations of these, only one connection fee of $4.25 applies to the call.
We charge the customer of the service requested even where that is not the service that answers the call and accepts it (eg, where the call to the requested service is diverted to another service).
Reverse charge calls can be made to numbers in Australia from either inside or outside Australia.
If a reverse charge call from overseas is made, the call charges for operator assisted international calls from Australia to the destination the caller is calling from apply.
You cannot make a reverse charge call to a mobile service or an InContact service.
The per minute rates are expensive, up to $2.64 per minute for a reverse charge call from a public payphone.

- SMS from a Fixed Phone - How does it work?
The text messaging service for fixed phones lets you send or receive a short text message (SMS). The message is delivered in text similar to a mobile phone display.
The phone will only send or receive an SMS if the customer has Calling Number Display. This costs $6 per month.
You must use the full number with an area code when you send an SMS to a fixed phone.
Not all mobile networks support sending SMS to fixed phones (eg Optus, Vodafone). Also, some cable connected fixed line customers (eg Optus cable) may not be able to receive SMS.
- SMS from a Fixed Phone - Charges
There are no monthly access charges for the text messaging service. A charge of 25 cents applies for each message you send, even if the message is not delivered or received. There is no charge for receiving a text message.
A limit of up to 160 characters applies per message. Text messages which are longer than the limit are charged as multiple messages.
- SMS from a Fixed Phone - Display of your telephone number
When you send a text message (including a reply), the recipient will be able to view your phone number. This will happen even if you have a Silent Line or have asked us to block calling line identification.
- Internet and Data Calls - What are they?
With Southern Phone any calls made to numbers with a prefix 0198 are classed as Internet & Data Calls. Usually your computer calls this number if your dial-up ISP uses an 0198 number.
These calls are not local calls but have the same low charge of 18c each.
Your Southern Phone bill is very helpful in separating these calls under the heading "0198 Internet & Data Calls". By adding this to the internet service charge by your ISP you can get a more realistic indication of the overall cost of your dial-up internet use.
- 1900/Premium Services - What are they?
Premium services are content or live services which can be accessed by making a phone call, by messaging (e.g SMS) or via a data connection from your mobile phone. Premium service numbers usually start with 188X, 19X, 190X, or an international number, for example 0011.
Examples of premium service calls include Internet websites containing adult content. They can also include mobile ring tones, sports results, dating contact services, weather services, voting lines for TV shows or competition lines.
Proprietary network services such as Vodafone Live also offer access to premium data services. Examples of such premium services include news updates, sports or weather reports, ring tones or wallpaper.
Calls to these numbers can be expensive and you should always check the cost of the premium service call before you make the call and keep track of how many calls you make and how long they last as the cost can quickly add up, possibly creating an unexpectedly high bill and potentially contributing to financial difficulty.
Failure to be able to pay a phone bill could result in the restriction of your telephone service and ultimately could result in recording of a default in your record with credit rating agencies, reducing your ability to obtain credit for other purposes in the future.
You are usually responsible for the cost of any calls made from your phone, including calls made by family and friends, even when made without your knowledge. There are a number of specific rules that relate to the provision of premium services aimed at ensuring that customers are fully informed about the price and content of the services. If these rules have been broken, your provider may not be able to ask you to pay for the service.
- 1900/Premium Services - How are you charged?
Call charges are determined by the provider of the 190 service. Timed and Fixed Fees are commonly used and some services charge according to data volume.
Timed Fee services generally consist of an initial Message Introduction Fee, plus a per second charge for the duration of the call. For Timed Fee services, tariffs generally range from 38.5 cents per minute up to $5.50 per minute (includes GST).
Fixed Fee services generally consist of a set charge, including the Message Introduction Fee, irrespective of the call duration. For Fixed Fee services, tariffs generally range from 38.5 cents fixed up to $38.50 fixed (includes GST).
Charges based on data volume usually apply according to the amount of data you download from or via a proprietary network.
You will be automatically charged on your telephone bill for using 190 services.
Note that these tariffs do not apply to calls made to international destinations and you should be especially careful when accessing these services. Sometimes your computer modem may dial an international number by using internet dialler software to access content on international internet sites (a practice known as "internet dumping"). This can lead to unexpected high bills. - What can you do to lessen the risk of high, unexpected bills?
You can bar access to premium services using one of the following options:
Bar all 190 calls This means all calls to 190 numbers are barred permanently.
Bar all calls (excluding local calls) This means all national, international, calls to mobiles and calls to 190 numbers are barred permanently.
Temporarily bar all calls (excluding local calls) using Call Control You can use this service to temporarily bar calls to mobiles, national, international and 190 calls.
We provide you with a PIN which you can use to activate or de-activate the bar. Southern Phone charges $3.30 (Incl.GST) per month for this service.
Barring access to proprietary networks This means all access to Vodafone Live can be barred at your request.
Note that if you wish to bar all international numbers but don't have a bar put on over-ride codes, you could be charged by another service provider for an international call. Over-ride codes are four digit numbers starting with the prefix 14 and allow customers to use another service provider on a call by call basis for long distance and international calls.
