Which Streaming Service is Best for You?

With many different streaming services on offer, you may find yourself a little lost with all the potential options. You’ve likely heard of some of the well-established heavy hitters such as Netflix and Stan, both of which offer a large catalogue of movies and television shows for you to enjoy. However, there are now several new entrants into the arena of streaming services being offered. Disney, Amazon, and Apple have all created their own streaming service, similarly offering a distinct library for your watching pleasure.

So, this begs the question: Which streaming service is best for you and your family?

We’ll run you through the pros and cons of each option below!

Netflix

Netflix is arguably the most well-known of all the streaming services available for use in Australia. It pioneered the service offerings of streaming services and it is still seen by many as the standard that other streaming services should aspire to reach. Here’s why!

Netflix is relatively affordable, with tiered pricing suited to more users and higher stream quality. The cheapest plan is $9.99/month, and the best is $19.99/month.

The catalogue is extremely extensive, offering a whole host of popular Netflix original productions alongside popular productions from other studios. To name a few popular Netflix originals: Stranger Things, Orange Is the New Black, BoJack Horseman and Tiger King. Their range is constantly expanding!

It is available on several devices such as Smart TVs, smartphones, gaming consoles and more. There are so many ways in which you can access Netflix content!

Stan

Stan is similar to Netflix, in that it was an early addition to the available streaming services. Both are very popular, and Stan has historically been the biggest competitor to Netflix in Australia over the years.

Again, Stan is quite affordable, with plans starting at $10/month and ranging up to $17/month. Stan has a similar focus on original productions, although their offerings have been a little less popular when compared to the extremely popular Netflix offerings mentioned earlier. It also has a lot of Australian content, due to it only being available here.

More recently however, they have strengthened their focus on more nostalgic and iconic TV shows. They have recently added Friends, The Office (US), Parks and Recreation, Scrubs, Seinfeld and much more. If these are more your cup of tea, you will find them on Stan!

If you have a smart device, Stan probably has the capability to play on it. It is a great option for streaming both Australian and international shows and movies.

Amazon Prime Video

Amazon has come out with it is streaming service, backed by a wealth of funding. They have an extensive backlog of Amazon originals and movies, as well as other non-originals.

One of the biggest advantages of Amazon Prime Video is that you can gain access to it for free if you have an Amazon Prime account. For $10.99/month you can not only get access to their premium delivery service, but also Amazon Prime Music (their music streaming service) and Amazon Prime Video. That’s a pretty sweet deal!

Find Amazon Prime Video compatibility on several devices, similar to Netflix and Stan.

Disney+

As one of the new players on the scene, Disney+ has a very impressive catalogue. Especially if you are a member of a family with children! Even if you are a little older, there’s plenty on here for you too. It’s a family-friendly platform that does not have any mature content.

As many of us know, Disney seems to have a hand in every staple show and movie series in modern popular culture. As a result, Disney+ offers well-known franchises such as Star Wars, National Geographic, Marvel, Pixar and many more of Disney’s own movies.

The Disney+ platform only has Disney-related content, and as a result the catalogue does not run as deep as some of the other options on this list. It is priced very competitively, only costing $9/month.

Apple TV Plus

Apple TV is the newest of all the streaming services discussed within this list. Boasting the cheapest buy-in cost at this stage, it is still early days for Apple TV Plus.

At only $4.99/month, you can subscribe to this service at a very low cost to you. You can also gain access to a full year’s free subscription through the purchase of some Apple devices.

The library currently boasts some impressively produced shows with some big talent but is still thin in terms of overall number and portfolio. It does however show some real promise for future productions!

Currently, this streaming service is not available for viewing through video game consoles, which does put it at a slight disadvantage. In summary, Apple TV Plus is one to watch for the future.
