Bundled Pricing

The bundled pricing discount applies when you bundle your Mobile Broadband service with a Southern Phone mobile or fixed line service.

Aerials

in some cases reception can be improved by using an external aerial attached to the USB modem. Southern Phone does not provide aerials and we suggest you source them from an electronics specialist.

SMS

You can send and receive text messages using 3G Mobile Broadband. Each Text Message (SMS) is charged at 25 cents per 160 character message.

24 month contract applies

All Mobile Broadband Services are on 24 month contract.

Mac and Linux Users

Apple Mac users must have OSX 10 or above. Our mobile broadband service is not compatible with Linux.

Excess Data

If you exceed your data plan monthly included usage allowance in any given billing period, an excess usage rate of 15 cents per MB will apply. Unused data allowance in any month cannot be rolled into subsequent months.
When you reach 80% and 100% of the included data, an SMS and email will be sent to notify you and warn you that data will be charged for once the download limit is exceeded.

Data Downloads

Data usage will be counted in kilobytes, where 1024kb = 1 MB and includes both uploads and downloads.

Download Speeds

Southern Phone Mobile Broadband uses the HSPA/3G network to deliver an internet service. The theoretical maximum download speed available on the HSPA/3G network is up to 3.6Mbps. Customers can expect speeds between 512kbps and 1.5Mbps with burst speeds up to 3Mbps. Actual speeds will vary and may be slower.

You must have Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, of Microsoft Vista operating systems to connect to the service.

Contract Terms

This is a mobile service. It is not comparable to ADSL Broadband which is a fixed line service and provides a better service.

Mobile services are affected by network utilization, weather conditions, the distance from the tower and hills as well as building types and other obstructions that can impede the signal.

Also, where the network is under heavy load a voice call will take precedence over a mobile data connection. This congestion can be worse in high use periods like school holidays.

A mobile broadband service may pass Service Qualification checks at the time of ordering, however these factors mean service delivery may not always be consistent.

Cancellation fees
If you cancel your Mobile Broadband Service before the end of the 24 month contract period, the cancellation fee is $300 pro rated for the months remaining on your contract term.
For example, a customer who cancels their contract 12 months into the 24 month contract will have to pay a termination fee of $300 x 12/24 (where 12 is the number of months left to run on the contract, divided by 24 months) = $150.
